I've Never Had a Massage Before and I'm a Bit Weird About It — That's Fine

You'd be surprised how many people book their first massage and spend the whole week leading up to it quietly stressing about what's actually going to happen. Am I supposed to talk? Do I have to take everything off? What if it's weird? What if I fall asleep? What if I snore?

I know this because they tell me. Usually at the start of the session, once they've figured out I'm not going to judge them for asking.

So here's the rundown. Everything you were wondering but didn't want to ask.

Before you even get on the table

When you arrive, the first thing we do is have a chat. Not a long one — just enough for me to understand what's going on with your body, whether there's anything I should know about, and what you're actually hoping to get out of the session.

If you've come in because your neck and shoulders feel like concrete, I want to know how long that's been going on and what makes it worse. If you've just had an absolutely ordinary week and you need an hour of peace and quiet, that's useful information too. Different goals, different approach.

This isn't an interrogation. It takes a few minutes and it means the session is actually tailored to you rather than just a generic run-through of the usual spots.

The clothing situation

This is the one everyone wants to ask about and nobody does.

For most remedial and relaxation massage, people undress to their underwear. You're covered by a sheet the entire time — only the area being worked on is uncovered at any point. So if I'm working on your lower back, that's what's exposed. Everything else stays covered.

If you'd rather stay more clothed, just say so. We'll work with it. The goal is that you feel comfortable enough to actually relax, because tense people don't get as much out of a session as relaxed ones. Simple as that.

What it actually feels like

Relaxation massage feels like exactly what it sounds like — slow, firm, flowing work that gets progressively more relaxing as your nervous system figures out it's allowed to switch off. Most people are half asleep within twenty minutes. Some people fully commit and start snoring. I take it as a compliment.

Remedial massage is a bit different. It's more targeted and specific, and yes — some of it can feel uncomfortable, particularly if we're getting into tissue that's been wound up tight for a while. But uncomfortable and painful are two different things, and the approach here is never to just push through regardless. I'll check in during the session and adjust based on what you tell me. The best results come from working with your body, not at it.

Is it going to be awkward?

Honestly? Not really. A lot of first-timers come in braced for it to be weird and leave wondering what they were worried about.

Part of my job is making sure you feel comfortable from the moment you walk in. I'll tell you what I'm doing and why. I'll check in on pressure. If something doesn't feel right or you want me to work somewhere else or avoid something entirely — just say so. You're completely in charge of what happens in that room.

Some people want to chat the whole way through. Some people close their eyes and disappear and I don't hear a word from them until they're getting off the table. Both are completely fine. I read the room.

What happens afterwards

Most people walk out feeling noticeably looser and calmer than when they walked in. Some people feel a bit tender the next day — particularly after remedial work on areas that have been tight for a while. That's normal, it's your body responding to the treatment, and it usually settles within a day or two.

Drink some water. Don't book one the night before a big event if it's your first time. And try not to schedule anything too demanding straight after — not because anything bad will happen, but because you'll probably just want to go home and sit quietly for a bit.

One last thing

If you've got questions before you book — about what's involved, whether it's the right thing for what you're dealing with, anything at all — just get in touch. No sales pitch, just a straight answer.

First timers are always welcome at Bird's Bodywork. We were all new to it once.
